Dr Joanne Peterkin

I am a Chartered Clinical Psychologist, registered with the Health Care Professions Council (since 2012) and the British Psychological Society. I have worked across a number of NHS services in the region including Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, Adult, Perinatal and Older Adult Community Mental Health Teams. I regularly use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), a cognitive analytic approach and systemic family work to support adults, children and families with a range of emotional difficulties, behavioural problems and mental health disorders (including generalised anxiety, social phobia, OCD, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, difficulties with self-harm and anger problems). I have also worked in specialist services including psychological services for fostered and adopted children. I am able to use Video Interaction Guidance to support families and have an interest in parent-infant mental health and attachment difficulties. I have specialist experience in working with people who have experienced trauma, and loss.

I work collaboratively with young people, adults and families to help them think about emotional difficulties in a way that makes sense to them, and to identify and agree goals that they are motivated to work towards.

Alongside my independent practice, I am the Consultant Clinical Psychologist for the CPFT Perinatal Mental Health Team, I have particular expertise and interest in supporting those who are pregnant or new parents. I am on the Perinatal Psychology Faculty of the British Psychological Society.

I am an Honorary Associate Professor with the University of East Anglia, providing teaching, supporting trainee clinical psychologists and perinatal research.

Given my independent practice is part-time, I am unable to provide support to those who may need high levels of responsive care between sessions or where there is a high level of risk which might be better managed within an NHS provision

I am a Principal Clinical Psychologist registered with the Health Care Professionals Council (HCPC) since 2020. I completed my doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of East Anglia and have an MSc in Research in Clinical Psychology. I have experience working across several NHS services including Adult, Perinatal and Older Adult Community Mental Health teams and working with children and adolescents in the Psychological Medicines Service at Addenbrookes hospital. Alongside my private practice, I work for the NHS developing the new Maternal Mental Health Service supporting women, birthing people and their families who have experienced infant loss.

In my clinical practice I draw upon a range of therapeutic models, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Compassionate Focused Therapy (CFT), Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Systemic approaches. I support adults, children and families with a range emotional difficulties and mental health disorders including generalised anxiety, health anxiety, social phobia, OCD, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and loss and bereavement.

As a clinician, I believe in the value of adopting a person-centred approach to ensure that those I work with receive the right support for them. I work collaboratively with individuals to support them to explore and make sense of their emotional distress in a safe and supportive environment, helping them to set achievable goals and reach their desired outcome.
